Why Most of Us Are Getting Recovery All Wrong

The Truth About Sports Recovery (That Most in Taunton Overlook)

When I work with clients at my clinic in Taunton, whether they’re into Hyrox, CrossFit, or just lifting heavy, I see the same issue over and over:

People think recovery is about protein shakes, a decent night’s sleep, and maybe a cold plunge if they’re feeling fancy.

But what is real recovery?

It’s got nothing to do with gadgets — and everything to do with how your life affects your nervous system.

First off, let’s get something straight.

I think you can get in awesome shape in your 30’s 40’s or even 50’s and 60’s.

So this is not an article that will say you have to accept the “inevitable decline” of your body.

Quite the a opposite actually.

I think we have to embrace the true awesome power of the human body – and believe it or not, that includes YOURS!

I disagree with Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon.

You are NOT too old for this S£$t

You can get in the best shape of your life and do things you never thought you could do in your 20’s.

I’m currently training to do a planche (look it up – it ain’t easy) and that is something I never tried in my 20’s.

But at 45, I’m progressing quite well. I’m currently at tuck planche level at 5/6 seconds. I’m aiming for 15 seconds

What I’m saying is that you don’t change your goal because you’re too old. You change the route to that goal.

ie. We have to do things in a different way than we used to.

Training Hard in the Gym — and Burning Out in Life

If you train at a gym in Taunton, ask yourself this:

Does your training plan take into account your stress at work, poor sleep from the kids, or the mental fatigue of a busy life?

Because your body does.

And if you ignore this, you’re more likely to suffer from:

  • Aches and tightness that won’t go away

  • Repeated injuries

  • Constant fatigue, even with “rest days”

What Worked in Your 20s Doesn’t Work Now

In your early 20s, your body could bounce back from anything.
You had more resilience, fewer responsibilities.

But once you hit your 30s and beyond — especially with years of training under your belt — your training age goes up and your life capacity goes down.

That means your recovery must evolve too.

What Real Sports Recovery Looks Like in Taunton

If you want to stay injury-free in the gym and keep progressing without burnout, your recovery needs to include:

  • ✅ Nervous system resets (e.g., Be-Activated)

  • ✅ Smart breathing practices

  • ✅ Lower-intensity sessions to balance out heavy ones

  • ✅ Listening to your body — not your ego

I think you can train everyday but you cannot train “balls out” everyday.

Because if you’re in a fight-or-flight state, your muscles won’t let go of tightness. Your joints won’t move freely. And your progress will stall.

Take This Into 2026

If you want 2026 to be the year you finally stay injury-free, build consistent strength, and enjoy training more…

Don’t just train harder.
Train smarter — and recover better.
