“I’m Old and Passed It”

It’s what we tell ourselves and other people when we start to find movement that bit tougher.

Bending down or getting out of the chair becomes harder and more painful.

That back pain is back

Or the knee is flaring up again.

When this happens, we just accept that this is us getting older and it’s something to be tolerated.

Well although it’s a symptom of your body being less robust and older.

It is NOT something we need to tolerate

It’s our attitude we need to change

Listen, I used to be no different – I’ve been guilty of saying this in the past.

Luckily I don’t say it anymore

But never have I heard such a destructive term as “I’m old and passed it”

Because it’s a self fulfilling prophecy.

If you want to keep perpetuating pain and misery in your life, keep telling yourself you’re weak and helpless.

And passed it.

Your life will happily give you results that match this belief

What you tell yourself in the mind is reflected in the body.

Your body is more intelligent than you think.

It listens to you and follows your (mind’s) example.

It is that incredible

If you want to heal, be pain-free, you must change your self talk.

Once you do that, you open yourself up to opportunities to grow and learn about your body

And discover what works well and what doesn’t.

You change your attitude into a problem solving state

Now there is some truth to getting old and breaking down.

Science has proven this.

We do struggle to maintain muscle mass as we age.✔️

We become less able to produce hormones like testosterone.✔️

We become less robust against injury.✔️

But this only means we have to open our minds to new ways of doing things.

For example, I m 42.

My body is giving me signs that it’s becoming less tolerant of the habits I’ve picked up from my youth.

My nutrition has had to evolve due to gastrointestinal problems.

My training as an athlete has had to evolve because I m less able to put my body through the work I did when I was younger.

But the one thing I do not accept is the “give up” mentality when we hit our mid to late thirties.

I’ve picked up a load of information in my thirties that I’m applying in my gym and track work.

The power of relaxation and breathing is massive in my performance.

This is helping me sustain an impressive level of fitness and strength for my age.

Plus there are things I can do in the gym that I couldn’t when I was in my 20’s.

🟩I can pistol squat now (See below)

I couldn’t do the pistol squat in my 20’s

🟩I still have an impressive physique for my age.

🟩I can olympic lift better than I’ve ever done before.

🟩I often do block starts with athletes that are 25 years my junior – good athletes that have qualified for the English Schools Championships – and I sometimes beat them out of the blocks.

I’m on the far side with the grey T-shirt

Obviously they have me on speed as the run progresses as you can see above.

The point I’m making is NOT to boast.

The point is that I find a way of sustaining and maybe improving in some areas of physical performance

In my 40’s

Because I never accept I’m old and passed it.

And neither should YOU.

There will come a time when I can’t do any of the above anymore.

That’s life and we must all accept that as the natural part of the aging process.

But we should never accept this in our 40’s and 50’s.

This is too early.

You should be able to be in the best physical shape you’ve ever been in your 40’s and 50’s.

And you can still improve your performance in any part of your life even in your 60’s

You just have to open your mind up to the possibility.

Accept you need to take a different approach than you did when you were in your 20’s.

And stop listening to the mainstream dogma of negativity.

Change your attitude and you’ll be surprised by the results – I promise you
