Why One Leg Feels Tighter Than the Other in Lunges — and How to Fix It

In my Taunton clinic, many leg injuries I treat can be tracked back to one leg being tighter than the other.

Back in the day as a committed 400m athlete, I often found this imbalance to be a problem especially during single-leg exercises such as split squats or lunges

One leg felt wobbly and tight while the other leg felt stable, smooth and strong.

This imbalance often caused many hamstring issues and as a result, much frustration.

I was advised by various coaches and trainers that actually doing more of these single leg exercises would help bring more balance to my body.

Therefore I would have less injury.

And so I diligently went about doing an 8 week unilateral strength program to address the weakness and instability on that side.

Now although it helped, single leg work was not enough to fix my issue.

One side contimued to feel tighter than the other and the hamstring injuries remained.

Simply because I wasn’t getting to the root cause of the issue.

We’ll go into the reasons why later on in this post but this kind of left-right imbalance is very common.

If you’re struggling with the same issue then unilateral strength work probably won’t be enough for you either

We are all human and we’ll never maintain perfect symmetry on both sides.

There’ll always be some difference.

However if you have noticed a stark difference in strength flexibility in each leg in lunges and split squats.

Or feeling like you’re swaying to one side in squats.

Well it’s something worth addressing properly because these imbalances do more than just feel annoying. Over time, they sap your strength, mess with your movement quality, and increase your risk of injury — especially under load. You might feel like your right side drives through a lift while the left side wobbles, or that your hip flexor grabs every time you step into a lunge.

So what’s going on?

❌ Why Single-Leg Training Won’t Fix the Problem

The usual advice is: train each side separately. Bulgarian split squats, step-ups, lunges — isolate the weaker side and “bring it up.”

And while single-leg work is good for building strength, it often doesn’t address why one leg is compensating in the first place.

The deeper issue is usually neurological — your body is protecting one side, often without you realising it. Maybe from an old injury. Maybe from stress. Maybe even from poor breathing patterns. When the brain doesn’t trust certain muscles to fire properly, it defaults to overusing others. That’s when you get tight hip flexors, glutes that won’t switch on, or a knee that collapses in.

You don’t need more reps.

You need a reset.

✅ How Be-Activated Helps Restore Balance and Performance

That’s where Be-Activated comes in.

This isn’t just sports massage. It’s a powerful system that helps restore proper muscle firing patterns by working with your breathing, nervous system, and body’s hierarchy of movement.

In my Taunton clinic, I use hands-on techniques to locate what’s shut down, activate the right areas, and help your body “switch back on.”

The result?

Movements like lunges and split squats feel smoother, more stable, and more powerful — with far less tightness.

It’s ideal for regular gym-goers, athletes, and high performers who want to fix the root of the problem, not just treat the symptoms.

If you’re in Taunton and feel like your training is being held back by an imbalance — this is your opportunity to experience something different.
